The Future Is So Heartwrenching

The new evening game: Going to School
Everyone announces they are going to school, suits up, responsibly dons a coat, wriggles into their backpacks, puts on their reindeer shoes and kisses us good-bye. They then take off to the first floor of the house for a little while where school is I guess.

Last night Benjamin started the game. When he returned home from school he exclaimed that they had seen airplanes today at school and rode the bus! We had a big round of hugs and kisses, and I told him how much I had missed him. Nicholas who was playing with Legoes scrambled into his clothing and took off for school.
When he returned some five minutes later his face was down and he was obviously sad. He came and sat in my lap and gave me a hug. I made a big deal over him coming back from school and asked him how his day went.
"No airplanes mommy. They were too far away." And he hugged me tighter obviously very disappointed. If I have a hard time dealing with this imaginary grievance, I imagine the real ones will break my heart.

That is so sweet and so sad all at the same time! What little actors you have!

Wow, what an elaborate school day they came up with. We are so sorry to hear Nicholas missed the planes. Even if his chance to see them wasn't real, it seems like the pain of missing them was.

This acting might even be better than the car races at grandma and grandpa's house over Thanksgiving :-) Both were terrific WINNERS !

What wonderful imaginations:) I agree with the Dukes, Nicholas was very upset he missed the planes. It will be interesting to see if next time Benjamin "goes to school" if Nicholas will go at the same time.

And you're right, there is no ache in your heart like that of your child going to school for the first time. I guess it's because we know they are leaving us behind. (I'm not helping you much, am I?)

BUT, we can only hope that when the reality of school arrives, Nicholas and Benjamin will enjoy it as much as imaginary school!!
