The Monday Outing: Shiloh

The Civil War.
Not really a big topic in the Stuber house, but Shiloh is close. So we loaded the car and took off Monday. I read we weren't supposed to climb on the cannons after we got home.

Don't climb on the monuments...
Civil War battlefields invoke a bit of irreverence in our family at the moment.

Now. Learning to march like a soldier, that's a bit more like it.

Learning to hold the twice-as-big-as-you-not-actually-real-gun properly?
Well, it was interesting but they were either tired or on the verge of melting into a puddle by the time they hauled those out to practice their marching skills.

Poor Alida was our car sick kid this time around.
The red dress was the third clothing change by the time we got there.
She passed out on the ride home thankfully.
Hey, don't climb on the monuments!

And Elaine was ready right after this drama.
So we missed the bloody pond but made our own injuries along the way.

So amongst melting and bleeding and throwing up, we're again not completely sure why we do these things. But when we are sitting there at 6 in the morning on a holiday with an entire day stretching out before us, we never fail to think these things are a good idea.

you're a glutton for punishment. but the trip to shiloh is one for the memory books. i love the boys with the guns (very natural) and the girls hugging the canon balls. i'm sure they just took over the place.

I wouldn't recommend reelfoot lake then if the kiddos enjoy getting up close & personal with their sightseeing. on a rainy day with nothing to do, I bet they could make enough noise to cause the Mississippi flow backward! Am I right?!

Well, they should take the "don't climb" out of the book. How can you have a cannon or a stack of cannon balls and not climb on them?

It looks as if you all braved the elements and had a good time anyway.

Poor Alida, car sick is the worst. And did Elaine get the scrapes getting down off a monument?

Glad you're able to post again:)
